School Excursions

Information on visits for schools and other educational groups.

Organised school group excursions are welcome (at no charge) at the Walkway. Experienced Volunteer Guides will accompany the students at all times.

OVERVIEW

Booking fees are waived for school/youth groups attending the Walkway.

Many of our school visits are sponsored by RSL Sub-branches who support the Walkway, and we thank them for contributing to educating the next generation of young Australians on our proud military history.

During an excursion, students will:

  • use resources in the Ralph Honner Kokoda Education Centre where they will learn of the Pacific war leading up to the Kokoda campaign.
  • Secondary students experience an immersive state-of-the-art virtual reality (VR) program about Kokoda.
  • Students will attend a wreath laying service at the Memorial Centerpiece, and visit some of the Walkway’s 22 stations representing a major Kokoda campaign battle or location.

For educational visits, schools or RSL Sub-branches please click here to book.

We welcome your feedback following a school visit.

VISITS FROM SCHOOL GROUPS

The Walkway welcomes primary and secondary students, whose attendance is often sponsored by RSL Sub-branches who support the Walkway.

All students will be accompanied by our experienced volunteer guides, and will gain an understanding of the Kokoda campaign, and more generally a broad overview of the service and sacrifice of Australian military personnel.

Please enquire to arrange a visit from your school, and we hope to see you soon at the Walkway.

TEACHER PLANNING RESOURCES

Teachers are encouraged to use the following resources to plan an excursion:

A comprehensive list of educational resources is available here.

FURTHER CLASSROOM RESOURCES

Teachers and students are also encouraged to make use of numerous resources, for further classroom discussion:

Students may also undertake further reading and research, primarily on external websites, dedicated to Australia’s involvement in World War Two, Australian service records, the South West Pacific campaign, and the battles in Papua New Guinea.
